Biography

Barbara Wilk, a native New Yorker, studied art at Smith College, the Art Students League with Will Barnet, the Fernand Leger Atelier in Paris, and the Camden Institute in London. She received an MS from the University of Bridgeport and taught art history and practical art at the University of Bridgeport, Fairfield University, Connecticut University, and Norwalk and Housatonic Community Colleges. She conducted art workshops in Arizona and Connecticut as a Master Teaching Artist of the CT Commission on the Arts.

Wilk is a painter, sculptor, ceramicist, weaver, and filmmaker, as well as a printmaker specializing in monoprints. She prints at the Graphic Arts Workshop in CT as well as Hand Graphics in New Mexico. She has exhibited in many national juried shows, the Smithsonian Traveling Craft show, New York galleries, and museums and libraries throughout New England. Wilk produced two short films and animated and produced five award-winning films which were shown on public television and are in national distribution. She has had thirteen one-woman shows.

Wilk studied Synectics and taught problem solving and the creative process for organizations and CT universities. She was an art consultant for the Teachers' Center in Fairfield, CT, owner of an art gallery, administrator of a CETA Arts Project, and President of the Westport-Weston Arts Council. Ms. Wilk received grants from CT Commission on the Arts and CT Council on the Humanities. She was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and in 1993 received the President's Volunteer Action Award.
