May Bender's artworks generally are abstract/expressionist following figurative, geometric, and non-objective direction done in various techniques from "painterly" and "gestural" to smoothly thinned out colors. Color is Mrs. Bender's strong point evidenced in her most recent grouping "Cerebrations," non-objective works which are the conceptualization of the wonderings of the mind about color and free forms, and the infinite combinations thereof. There are no stories to tell, just the excitement and pleasure of almost unexpected results of texture, line, and form.
Bender's company, May Bender Design Associates, produced industrial design, packaging, product design, and corporate identity. She has written numerous articles for publication. Her awards include the Package Designers Council International's Packaging Person of the Year, 1985 and CLIO, 1980. In addition, she has taught design in packaging at the Parsons/New School in New York.
Bender has had numerous solo exhibitions including Educational Testing Service, Princeton; Johnson & Johnson, New Brunswick; New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Newark; Georgian Court college, Lakewood; Middlesex County College, Edison; Red River Valley Museum, Vernon, TX; and Tucker Anthony, Princeton. Her current affiliations include the Art Students League, Package Designers Council International (past president now honorary), New York Artists Equity Association, New York Artists Online, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
Artist's Statement:
"The ultimate abstraction takes place in mathematics where words are replaced by symbols. Connecting the symbols is rigorously defined by writing and computerization. Abstraction in art becomes mathematics in its visual aspect within the basic elements of art . . . color and form, which words cannot define."
