The following information was provided by the artist unless otherwise noted.
Verlan Campion was born on June 25, 1944, during one of the worst air raids on London. The family returned to their native Czechoslovakianow the Czech Republicshortly after the end of the war. During communist rule, her family was discriminated against for spending the war years in the "Capitalist West" even though her father fought in the Spanish Civil War with a Czech brigade that was formed to fight Franco. The discrimination eased off with the end of the Stalin era enabling Campion to enter the university where she studied electrical engineering.
It was not until she came to this country that she realized she was an artist and that painting was the medium for expressing the feelings she wanted to share with others. She studied with Knox Martin at the Art Students League. His direction had a significant effect in her understanding design, the principles of which have been assimilated in her own work. She later studied intaglio printing with Veejay Kumar at Manhattan Graphics Center. Campion is represented by the So Hyun Gallery, 41 West 57th Street, NYC.
Campion was introduced to Scientology whose principles she applies to her daily life. It continues to sustain her creative spirit and positive attitude.
