The National Academy of Design (now the National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts) was founded in 1825 "to sustain an association of artists for the purpose of instruction and exhibition." Today, that mission is realized in an honorary association of artists, a school of fine arts, and museum. As one of the oldest arts institutions in the country, the National Academy has played a vital role in the development of the fine arts in America from its earliest years to the present day.
