The Pastel Society of America is a professional association. The aims of the Society are as follows: To set standards of excellence and to encourage the use of pastel. To unite outstanding pastelists through membership in the society. To establish separate pastel categories in major art exhibitions, with jurors qualified to evaluate pastels and prizes commensurate with the quality of work. To focus attention on the renaissance of pastel and educate the public regarding the permanence and beauty of the medium. To offer workshops and demonstrations as part of an educational program. To encourage young talent by offering classes, critiques, and scholarships. To establish a vehicle of communication for the exchange of news, ideas, and members' achievements through the newsletter, the Pastelagram. To hold yearly members shows at prominent galleries and museums. To culminate the year's activities with an annual national juried show, "Pastels Only", in the Grand Gallery of the National Arts Club.
The Pastel Society of America has been elected to the Archives of American Art in the Smithsonian Institution. It is a corporate member of the National Arts Club and maintains national headquarters in this historic, landmark building. In 1972 the first "Pastels Only" exhibition was held here. The overwhelming success of this show confirmed the need to make it an annual national event and establish an pastel society.
Flora B. Giffuni, nationally known artist, founded the Pastel Society of America and became president. With her vision, and under her devoted inspirational leadership, the Society has flourished and now enjoys world-wide acclaim.
